Hi there, I'm writing as a resident of the Greenpoint/Williamsburg community regarding the upcoming $14.7M renovation of the McCarren Park asphalt lot. While I appreciate the planned improvements including stormwater management, I'm asking that a meaningful portion of the renovated space be dedicated to open, unprogrammed green space: a flexible lawn area where community members can gather, relax, and use the space in whatever way they choose. Currently, nearly all of McCarren Park's space is programmed for specific activities (tennis, baseball, soccer, track, handball, pool). What our community lacks most is the simple, flexible green space that makes parks like Central Park's Sheep's Meadow, Prospect Park's Long Meadow, and Berlin's Tempelhof so beloved and well-used. I support the stormwater infrastructure. I support improving this space. I'm simply asking that the design prioritize open, flexible green space as a core feature, not as leftover space between programmed areas. The renovation timeline extends to 2029. There is time to get this right for the whole community. Thank you for your consideration. [Your name] [Your address]
